Previous owner's name written on front paste-down. Text block is clean, tight and unmarked. An Addenda and Errata pamphlet (dated 1940) is laid in. Includes 29 figures and frontispiece (Portrait of Paré, aged forty-five). This is number 4 in The History of Medicine Series issued under the auspices of the library of The New York Academy of Medicine. Paré's pioneer work was in the department of military surgery. The chief services rendered by Paré were a reform in the treatment of gunshot wounds, and the revival of the practice of ligating arteries after amputation.

Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Albrecht von Graefe ( 1828 - 1870) was a pioneering German ophthalmologist. Von Graefe introduced iridectomy as a surgical solution to relieve intraocular pressure. In 1865, von Graefe introduced a new approach to cataract surgery by using a modified linear extraction method that significantly decreased the rate of infection. Graefe made many contributions to ophthalmological science, being considered one of the more important (if not the most important) figures in 19th century ophthalmology. Among his achievements were a method of treating glaucoma and a new operation for cataract. [Wikipedia] An uncommon title.

Avicenna (c.980 - 1037) was a Persian polymath who is regarded as one of the most significant thinkers and writers of the Islamic Golden Age. His most famous works are The Book of Healing - a philosophical and scientific encyclopedia, and The Canon of Medicine - a medical encyclopedia - which became a standard medical text at many medieval universities and remained in use as late as 1650. Light age toning to the wrappers. From Wikipedia:"Douglas Moray Cooper Lamb Argyll Robertson FRSE (1837 - 1909) was a Scottish ophthalmologist and surgeon. Argyll Robertson pupil is named after him. After earning his degree in 1857 from the University of St Andrews, he went to Berlin to study under Albrecht von Graefe. Robertson spent most of his medical career in Edinburgh as an eye surgeon at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and teacher of ophthalmology at the University of Edinburgh. For a while he was honorary eye physician to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. Robertson made several contributions in the field of ophthalmology; in 1863 he researched the effects on the eye made by physostigmine, an extract from the Calabar bean (Physostigma venenosum), which is found in tropical Africa. He correctly predicted that physostigmine would become very important in the treatment of eye disorders. He also described a symptom of neurosyphilis that affects the pupils of the eye, which is known today as Argyll Robertson pupils."
