Text in Hungarian. pp. 88. Text is unmarked by underlining or notations. The dustjacket shows edgewear, some small tears and a bit of age toning around spine and the edges. There is an interesting INSCRIPTION by the author on the title page. Under the title (in quotation marks):"Five hundred bards,/to die they went/to sing,/but none of them/could say the words:/Long live Edward,/the King" Edward I is said to have ordered five hundred bards burned at the stake as part of his effort to dominate the people of Wales during his Iron Ring days. The deed was commemorated seven hundred years later by Hungarian poet, János Arany, in his rebel poem, The Bards of Wales. The poem is considered to be a manifesto of the passive resistance which led to the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. [Wikipedia] The remainder of the author's INSCRIPTION is difficult to read, but is dated Iowa City, Iowa 1974. Ágnes Gergely participated in the University of Iowa International Writing Program. She is a prominent Hungarian, writer, poet and translator.
