7 Mikra'ot gedolot : 'im 32 perushim (10 volumes)
Nyu York (New York) Bet mishar sefarim "Pardes" (Pardes Publishing House) 1951 Later Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket 29 cm tall
Text in Hebrew. Ten volumes (complete). Text in each volume is clean, tight and unmarked by underlining or notations. This is a very heavy multi-volume set. The perushim were disciples of the Vilna Gaon, Elijah ben Solomon Zalman, who left Lithuania at the beginning of the 19th century to settle in the Land of Israel, which was then part of Ottoman Syria under Ottoman rule. They were from the section of the community known as mitnagdim (opponents of the Chassidic movement) in Lithuania. The name perushim comes from the parash, meaning "to separate". The group sought to separate themselves from what they saw as the impurities of the society around them in Europe, and the name literally means 'separated (individuals)'. In the generations prior to their departure for Israel, the term perushim referred to commentaries in the sifrei kodesh (holy books). It was later applied to the Vilna group, alluding to their practice of studying biblical commentaries, not just the Talmud and later commentaries.[Wikipedia]

16 About, E. [Edmond] The Roman Question. By E. About. Translated from the French by H.C. Coape.
London W. Jeffs, 15, Burlington Arcade, and 69, King's Road, Brighton, Foreign Bookseller to the Royal Family 1859 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket 21 cm tall
xi, 305, vi p. Binding has wear along the edges and bumping at the corners. Small closed tear at the top of the spine. Gilt letering to the spine. Sun fading to the spine. Two period owner's names written on ffep. Edmond François Valentin About (1828 - 1885) was a French novelist, publicist and journalist. He made his name as an entertaining anti-clerical writer. The Roman Question was a dispute regarding the temporal power of the popes as rulers of a civil territory in the context of the Italian Risorgimento. On 9 February 1849, the Roman Republic took over the government of the Papal States. In the following July, an intervention by French troops restored Pope Pius IX to power, making the Roman Question a hotly debated one even in the internal politics of France. In July 1859, after France and Austria made an agreement that ended the short Second Italian War of Independence, an article headed "The Roman Question" in the Westminster Review expressed the opinion that the Papal States should be deprived of the Adriatic provinces and be restricted to the territory around Rome. This became a reality in the following year, when most of the Papal States were annexed by what became the Kingdom of Italy. It ended with the Lateran Pacts between King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and Pope Pius XI in 1929. [Wikipedia]
