pp. 31. Two folded plates. There is some light dampstaining to the leaves in the upper and outer margin (no impact to text). Folded plates have captions: "Croquis del perfil longitudinal y corte geolo`gico del Camino de Mexico a la Caverna de Cachuamilpa" and "Convolvulacea. Especie nueva, Exogonium Olivae (Barcena)". Both signed: "Lit .de Iriarte, Mexico". First plate hand-colored, second plate chromo-lithographed. Reinforcing tape along spine. Small three hole perforation on spine edge (this might have been a library book, but there are no obvious library markings.) There is a brief inscription on the reverse of the title page. It is in Spanish, dated May 1874 and signed Jesus Diaz. Mariano de la Bárcena (1842 - 1899) was a Mexican engineer, botanist, politician, and interim Governor of Jalisco. He was from Ameca, Jalisco. The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park in Guerrero, Mexico, is best known for the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa Caverns, which are one of the largest cave systems in the world.[Wikipedia]

Rufino Cuervo y Barreto (1801 - 1853) fue un político, abogado y periodista granadino. Estudió en la Universidad del Rosario, donde obtuvo el grado de doctor en Derecho civil y Canónico. Posteriormente se vinculó a los cargos públicos como funcionario de la secretaría de Hacienda y luego como parlamentario y jefe político de Bogotá. Desde la década de 1820 y hasta sus últimos días se dedicó al periodismo. Casado con doña María Francisca Urisarri y Tordecillas, dos de sus hijos hicieron parte de la historia política (Antonio Basilio) y cultural (Rufino José) del país. Don Rufino José Cuervo Urisarri (1844 - 1911) fue un destacado filólogo, humanista y erudito colombiano. He was one of the earliest to explore the shores of Mexico. He left Cuba with four ships in April 1518. After rounding the Cape of Guaniguanico in Cuba, he sailed along the Mexican coast and arrived on May 1 at the Tabasco region in southern Mexico. Río Grijalva (Mexico) was named after him. Juan Díaz (1480–1549), born in Seville, Spain, was a 16th-century conquistador and the chaplain of the 1518 Grijalva expedition, the Itinerario (itinerary route) of which he wrote.[Wikipedia]

Alessandro Malaspina (1754 - 1810) was an Italian explorer who spent most of his life as a Spanish naval officer. Under a Spanish royal commission, he undertook a voyage around the world from 1786 to 1788, then, from 1789 to 1794, a scientific expedition (the Malaspina Expedition) throughout the Pacific Ocean, exploring and mapping much of the west coast of the Americas from Cape Horn to the Gulf of Alaska, crossing to Guam and the Philippines, and stopping in New Zealand, Australia, and Tonga. In 1792, back in Mexico, Malaspina dispatched two schooners (or "goletas") to conduct more detailed explorations of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Strait of Georgia. These were Sutíl, commanded by Dionisio Alcalá Galiano, and Mexicana, under Cayetano Valdés y Flores. Both were officers of Malaspina's.[Wikipedia]
