Contents: v. 1. de natura animalium libri XVII -- v. 2. varia historia; epistolae, fragmenta. Claudius Aelianus (c. 175 - c. 235 CE), often seen as just Aelian, born at Praeneste, was a Roman author and teacher of rhetoric who flourished under Septimius Severus and probably outlived Elagabalus, who died in 222. He spoke Greek so perfectly that he was called "honey-tongued" (meliglossos); Roman-born, he preferred Greek authors, and wrote in a slightly archaizing Greek himself. His two chief works are valuable for the numerous quotations from the works of earlier authors, which are otherwise lost, and for the surprising lore, which offers unexpected glimpses into the Greco-Roman world-view.[Wikipedia]

2 Andrews, E.A.; Lewis, Charlton T.; Short, Charles A Latin dictionary : founded on Andrews' edition of Freund's Latin dictionary revised, enlarged, and in great part rewritten, by Charlton T. Lewis and Charles Short
Oxford Oxford at the Claredon Press 1975 Later Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket 26 cm tall
xiv, 2,019 p. Text is clean, tight and unmarked by underlining or notations. A Latin Dictionary (or Harpers' Latin Dictionary, often referred to as Lewis and Short or L&S) is a popular English-language lexicographical work of the Latin language, published by Harper and Brothers of New York in 1879 and printed simultaneously in the United Kingdom by Oxford University Press. The work is usually referred to as Lewis and Short after the names of its editors, Charlton T. Lewis and Charles Short. It was derived from the 1850 English translation by Ethan Allen Andrews of an earlier Latin-German dictionary, Wörterbuch der Lateinischen Sprache, by the German philologist Wilhelm Freund, in turn based on I.J.G. Scheller’s Latin-German dictionary of 1783. The Andrews translation was partially revised by Freund himself, then by Henry Drisler, and was finally edited by Short and Lewis.[Wikipedia]

4 Colonna, Francesco; Manuzio, Aldo (printer.) Leaf from Hypnerotomachia printed by Aldus Manutius Venice, 1499 / [Hypnerotomachia Poliphili ubi humana omnia non nisi somnium esse doce : leaf]
[Venetiis] [In aedibus Aldi Manutii, accuratissime] 1499 First Thus Soft Cover Very Good 32 cm tall
A leaf from Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. This leaf has a woodcut illustration on each page. The leaf is in a hardcover folder with gold embossed lettering on the cover:"Leaf from Hypnerotomachia printed by Aldus Manutius Venice, 1499" There is some wear to this binding with most along the edges. There are annotations on each side of the leaf. Also some wear to the edges of the leaf. From Wikipedia: "The text of the book is written in a bizarre Latinate Italian. Without explanation, the text is full of words based on Latin and Greek roots. The book, however, also includes words from the Italian language and illustrations which include Arabic and Hebrew words. Moreover, Colonna would invent new forms of language when those available to him were inaccurate. The book also contains some uses of Egyptian hieroglyphs, but they are not authentic. ...The book has long been sought after as one of the most beautiful incunabula ever printed. The typography is famous for its quality and clarity. Its roman typeface, cut by Francesco Griffo, is a revised version of a type which Aldus had first used in 1496 for the De Aetna of Pietro Bembo."
